Puthimari College, a premier institution of higher education in Puthimari area was established on August 5, 1981. The establishment of the college is the outcome of the effort vanguard people of the area because the people felt that the people of the greater Puthimari area had been deprived of access to higher education owing to the absence of higher educational institution in the locality. Thanks to the initiative taken by the enthuasiastic people of the area, for setting up of the college by the bank of river Puthimari that comes forward to fulfill the long-felt thirst for higher education for the young generation. Presently, the academic activities of the institution widen beyond the territory of the district. It is now acknowledged as one of the pioneers of higher education in Assam. Meanwhile, the College has attained "B" grade in NAAC Re-accreditation in 2012.

The college stands at Soneswar by the Puthimari River in the district of Kamrup(R). It is 40 kms to the north of Guwahati, the capital of Assam. 31 No. National Highway connects the college by a PWD road at Baihata. It is situated in a sylvan area with the Puthimari River in the west and Alta village in the east.

The college has enough provisions for class rooms, departments, well equipped library and student union hall etc. The college has also sufficient provisions for games and sports for the students and several committees to cater to the needs for all round development of the students as well as the community. It is now it has set up a digital classroom and e-learning room to facilitate the students with the taste of knowledge world wide. Hostel facilitiy for girl students are being made available. The college is likely to open new streams like science, commerce as well as vocational courses.
